THE woman at the centre of a fake penis sex trial has been granted permission to appeal her conviction. that Gayle Newland, 25, was jailed for eight years last November after tricking her pal into sex by pretending to be a man.But she will now get her case heard at London’s Court of Appeal where a panel of three judges will determine the strength of the conviction and assess her sentence at a hearing later this year.
It means Newland could have her guilty verdicts quashed and a retrial could be ordered.During a high profile trial at Chester Crown Court jurors heard how she had sex with her victim while pretending to be a man named Kye Fortune and persuading the woman to wear a blindfold. The former marketing manager seduced the pal online using her male alter-ego, which she created when she was just 13-years-old.She told her victim ‘Kye’ was insecure about his appearance after receiving treatment for a brain tumour. Her victim, who said they had sex around ten times, finally discovered the truth when she pulled off her face mask during sex.
Gayle was standing there with a prosthetic penis. I just couldn’t believe it,the woman said.land insisted her “girlfriend” knew her identity and the pair acted out in the role play while they struggled with their sexuality. Her defence told Chester crown court she had been diagnosed with five psychological problems, including social anxiety disorder.Newland admitted creating a fake Facebook profile in the name of Kye Fortune but said her friend played along with her online persona. She spent “hundreds” of hours talking on the telephone to her friend while posing as Kye.
The pair also spent days in each other’s company in hotels and the victim’s flat — while Newland’s victim wore a mask as they sunbathed and watched telly together. Her victim told jurors: “Every time I met up with Kye Fortune I either had the mask on already or he would wait outside the door and I would put it on.I was so desperate to be loved. It’s pathetic, so desperate for love, so desperate.
We were just lying there, just cuddling, sometimes we would watch films, sometimes we would just talk. It sounds stupid to say but it was a proper relationship, just normal.During sentencing a judge branded former University of Chester student Newland an obsessional, highly manipulative, deceitful, scheming and thoroughly determined young woman.
